Our History

It was 1996 and the Internet was Strange and New

When I started Art Wave in 1996, the Internet was a brave new world—Google was not founded until 1998. (If you're interested, here is a great look back at those early days.) I started the business as an online art gallery, hence the origin of the name Art Wave. Later, while on vacation in Cortona, Italy, I was working on my website (on a laptop with a dial-up connection) when the rental property manager stopped by for a glass of wine. When he found out what I was doing, he said he might want to get a website to promote the rental homes he managed. At that time, his primary advertisement consisted of a 1-inch classified ad in the New York Times. He became my first business website client—Classic Tuscan Homes—and remained a client until he retired and sold his business in 2016, 20 years later.

That early experience motivated me to change my whole business model and refocused my efforts to developing websites for businesses. It was tough going in those early years. Many business owners asked "why do I need a website?" We were all trying to figure it out together. As the web evolved, so did we. We have grown into a full-service internet marketing agency providing end-to-end support for your online presence, from domain name acquisition to web hosting and ongoing maintenance and marketing.

So much has changed over the years as connection speeds have gotten faster, computer screens have gotten larger and mobile phones began to support internet browsing. (The first phone that could be called a smart phone by today's standards was the Palm Pilot and Apple didn't launch the iPhone until 2007.) Website coding changed too, going from plain HTML to HTML5 with javascript and PHP connected to databases and running content management systems.

We still work on projects of all shapes and sizes, but we’ve earned a reputation for implementing well designed websites and providing great support. Our goal from day one was to Do It Right and we still enjoy doing that every day.

We aren’t sure what will come next, but maybe we'll get to do something with you. We’re looking forward to it.

Meet Dick Raney

Dick Raney

I've lived in 9 different cities—all in the South—but have called Atlanta home since 1966 when I started high school at North Springs. I'm fortunate to be married to a wonderful woman who is a successful real estate agent and we have 4 grown children (2 boys and 2 girls) and 3 dogs.

Art Wave is a second career for me, after spending 20 years in sales. I love the rapidly evolving world of the internet and dealing with the steady stream of new challenges. Every day is new and exciting.

In my spare time I like to research web design trends and learn new techniques for helping clients—they say you should do what you love—but I also enjoy reading (favorite book was Pillars of the Earth), golf, snow skiing, cooking on my Big Green Egg and traveling. And I like any kind of adventure. When I eat out, I usually order the thing I have never had before.
